ISIS, Hamas and Zionism: Enemies or allies?

Of course, ISIS and Hamas should be enemies of Zionism. But somehow, for ISIS, the struggle against Israel gets lost in its caliphate struggle. After seizing bits of Iraq and Syria, the ISIS line was: sure, get the Jews out of Palestine, but only after we’ve cleaned up the ummah, got rid of kafirs. Then they got bogged down in slaughtering Yazidis, Shia, and even Sunnis if their beards weren’t regulation.

Parallels

Long term strategy is what motivates both ISIS and Zionists. All’s fair in love and war, so torturing and killing civilians is the order of the day. It’s all about land, so both are aggressively expansionist. Ethnic cleansing and racism based on spurious historical readings are necessary.

Canadian Eric Walberg is known worldwide as a journalist specializing in the Middle East, Central Asia and Russia. A graduate of University of Toronto and Cambridge in economics, he has been writing on East-West relations since the 1980s.

He has lived in both the Soviet Union and Russia, and then Uzbekistan, as a UN adviser, writer, translator and lecturer. The hidden multiculturalism

Learning to cope with multiple selves became the quest of Sardar’s adult life.

Asian Britons are all the direct product of the British empire, which steamrolled around the world, razing whatever got in its way, leaving a lot of detritus, creating new identities (for better or worse) for hundreds of millions, with a legacy that keeps giving today (for better or worse).

As a Muslim Canadian, I enjoyed Sardar’s dissection of the British Muslim experience, which has some parallels with US-Canada, but a big difference.
